At SJ Highland Construction Ltd, Mental Health Awareness Week is more than just a campaign—it’s a reminder that our people are the most important part of every project we take on. While we’re proud of the homes and spaces we build across the Scottish Highlands, we know the foundations of our company lie in the health and wellbeing of our team.
The Hidden Struggles Behind Hard Hats
Construction work is physically demanding, often performed in challenging weather conditions, tight deadlines, and isolated rural sites. But the mental toll it takes is something that’s not as easy to see. According to recent studies, workers in the construction industry are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and in too many cases, suicide. According to the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, two construction workers take their own lives every working day in the UK. That’s a heartbreaking statistic — and a sign that we need to change the conversation.
Why Is Construction So Affected?
There are unique pressures in our industry:
- Long hours and job insecurity
- Working away from home
- Physical strain and injury
- “Macho” culture that discourages speaking up
- Isolation in remote or rural settings — especially relevant in the Highlands
These can take a serious toll, especially when mental health isn’t openly talked about.
Breaking the Silence: Why It Matters
In an industry where safety is paramount, mental wellbeing should be treated with the same seriousness as physical safety. A mentally healthy workforce is not only happier but also more productive, safer, and better equipped to face the challenges of the job.At SJ Highland Construction, we want to break the stigma that still surrounds mental health in our industry. We want our crew, our subcontractors, and our clients to know: it’s okay not to be okay. And more importantly, it’s okay to ask for help.
What We’re Doing
This year, during Mental Health Awareness Week (12th – 19th May 2025), we’re taking steps to promote mental wellbeing on-site and off:
- Toolbox Talks on Mental Health: Starting conversations on-site in a practical, supportive way.
- Access to Support: Sharing resources and contact info for local mental health services and industry-specific support like Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.
- Listening Ear Initiative: Encouraging peer support—sometimes just having a cuppa and a chat can make all the difference.
Mental Health First Aid Training: Building a team that knows how to spot the signs and respond appropriately
How You Can Help
Whether you’re part of the SJ Highland family or reading this as a fellow tradesperson, manager, or client, here’s how you can make a difference:
- Check in on your mates. A quick “How are you really doing?” goes a long way.
- Share your story. If you’ve struggled, your openness could help someone else feel less alone.
- Normalise mental health chats. Let’s make talking about mental health as normal as talking about the weather.
Let’s Build a Healthier Industry—Together
