Client Brief

This house was built in the 1800s and was originally a pub with stables alongside for horses. The client wanted to renovate the space into a family home. While they wanted a modern design, they wanted to keep some of the original features to maintain the property’s character and charm.

What We Did

The original building was definitely in need of some love and attention! We started with the hallway, which had lots of lovely period features. We stripped everything away from the walls, dry-lining and replastering to strengthen them and prepare for painting. Our team decorated, fitted new skirting and architrave, and sanded the original floor, which was still in excellent condition.
We then moved on to the kitchen, which was an enormous task. The client wanted an open-plan kitchen and dining space, so we had to remove the separating wall. This was structural, so a lot of work was needed to ensure the space was still structurally sound, including installing four large RSJ steel beams.
Our team stripped back the walls and discovered an old brick oven that had been hidden for years. We turned this into a beautiful feature by installing a wood-burning stove. We also made room in an old chimney to accommodate a range cooker, fitting the hood into the chimney space above and venting it out further up the cavity. Oak floors were laid down, with underfloor heating installed to create a warm and welcoming space.
Skirting, new kitchen cupboards, granite worktops, a hand-crafted dresser-style cupboard, and French doors opening out into the garden finished the space.

Next, the bathroom was totally stripped out, with a new floor, dry lining, and plastering. We then fitted a new suite complete with bespoke cupboards for the sink, toilet, and to conceal the new heating system. We tiled the bathroom and fitted a marble worktop on the sink unit and around the bath to complete the look.

The Result

This project was challenging but highly rewarding. It was exciting to see this home renovation take shape a little every day! The client loved the end result and was delighted that we kept so many features of the original space.
